New Area Code 273 Coming to Eastern Quebec — February 27, 2027

IXICA advises customers that, effective February 27, 2027, the new 273 area code will be introduced as an overlay in eastern Quebec, covering the same geographic region currently served by 367, 418 and 581. This addition will provide more telephone numbers to meet growing demand. Existing telephone numbers and area codes will remain unchanged. Customers requesting new telephone numbers may receive a number with the 273 area code beginning on that date.

There will be no change to how calls are dialled. Local calls will continue to require 10 digits (area code + telephone number), and existing long-distance dialling procedures and local calling boundaries will remain unchanged. Dialling 9-1-1 will not change, and other three-digit services, such as 4-1-1 and 8-1-1, will also remain unaffected. Businesses using PBX systems, alarm systems or automated diallers should ensure their equipment accepts the new 273 area code and update any area-code restrictions where necessary. For questions or assistance, please contact IXICA.

As many of you are likely aware, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has announced the implementation of 1000 NPA-NXX block numbers, rather than the current 10,000 number blocks. This decision seeks to address the rapid depletion of available numbers by ensuring a more efficient allocation of phone numbers, and better accommodate the growing needs of consumers and businesses alike. This decision is slated to be implemented on Oct 6, 2025. While this date seems a long way off, there is a lot of technical work required to get this set up and IXICA has already begun the process to be ready for next fall. If you have any questions about this, feel free to reach out to us.
